A career pivot is the act of finding a new career and is reliant on your accrued experienced and skills, which are the underpinnings that will help you shift in a new direction.
To successfully execute the career pivot, you don’t necessarily need new skills, rather, you use the skills you possess already and apply them in your new career. When changing careers, you need to ensure that your resume highlights the experiences and skills that will help you break into your new target field.
Here are a few pointers for a successful career pivot:
Research the industry and position you want to pivot to, what hiring managers are searching for, and try to put together a target company list
In your resume, highlight the experiences and skills you possess in the industry you want to transition to and share achievements that show the skills needed for the new role
Use a CAR format (challenge, action, result) to highlight relevant achievements
Include a testimonial to support your expertise and accomplishments in the new industry
Being able to articulate your value creatively — realigning your resume for a transition — will play a crucial role in your successful implementation of a career pivot. While pivoting you’ll need to connect the dots for people. How you tell your story makes all the difference!
